Julana has been my friend for 34 years. I can say that with certainty because we met at a Childbirth Education Association workshop when my son was nestled in his Snugli carrier. (And, I clearly remember my son’s birth year!) I was new to the Tacoma/Gig Harbor area, and as we made acquaintance, I remarked that I was so new in town that I didn’t really have any friends. Without missing a beat, Julana replied, “I’ll be your friend!” And so we were.
When Julana decided to retire this year as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, she wanted to celebrate her professional life with a small group of girlfriends. After listening to women all these long years, it was Julana’s turn to be heard. To immerse herself in the occasion, she dressed in her professional garb - scrubs and lab coat. Julana looks great in scrubs! She has an exterior elegance to go with her beautiful soul.
Five of us sat in the comfortable space of her living room as Julana talked about the choices she made when inevitable changes in her life demanded decisions. She recounted stories about patients who lives touched hers. She showed art and photographs gifted to her during these years. And after enough had been said, we shared a delicious paella dinner lovingly prepared by her husband.
